In-person estate sales in Charlottesville
A sale in the home, then a house that is actually empty.
An in-person estate sale is held in the home, for buyers who need to see the furniture and the housewares together. It fits houses with enough volume to justify opening the door — matching furniture, a stocked kitchen, a garage of usable tools — and a calendar that can spare the sale days.
The sale is one step in the sort, not the whole job. Keepers are packed or stored first. After the sale, donations go to Goodwill and the Habitat Store, recycling goes to McIntire, and Cville Junk Removal hauls what is left for disposal through the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority.
How it works
- 1
Walk the house and pull out anything the family is keeping.
- 2
Stage what will be sold, and set aside donation and disposal as their own groups.
- 3
Hold the sale in the home.
- 4
Clear what did not sell — donate, recycle, dispose — and leave the property broom-clean.
In-Person Estate Sale questions
- Does the family need to be at the sale?
- No. Keepers should be gone or clearly marked before sale day. Access can be a lockbox if you are out of town.
- What if the house is not a good candidate for an in-home sale?
- Then we don't force one. Ordinary, worn contents often do better as a donation-and-cleanout, or as a few online listings, than as a weekend sale.
- How soon is the house empty after the sale?
- The cleanout of unsold items is scheduled with the sale, usually the day it ends, so the listing or the next occupant is not waiting on leftovers.
- Can some pieces be sold online instead?
- Yes. Individual items that will do better on the shop, Facebook Marketplace, or eBay can be listed alongside the in-home sale.
