Estate sales in Charlottesville
Sell what has a buyer. Donate, recycle, or dispose of the rest, in the same plan.
An estate sale makes sense when the house has furniture, housewares, tools, or collections that people will actually buy. It does not make sense as a delay tactic when a listing photographer is already booked and the contents are ordinary. The walkthrough is where that call gets made.
Sales run two ways, and many houses use both. An in-person estate sale is held in the home. An online estate sale lists pieces through the Charlottesville Estate Cleanout online shop, Facebook Marketplace, eBay, and other sites that fit the item. Whatever does not sell still has a destination: Goodwill, the Habitat Store, McIntire Recycling Center, or disposal with Cville Junk Removal and the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority.
How it works
- 1
Walk the house and separate what is worth selling from what should be donated or hauled.
- 2
Choose an in-home sale, an online sale, or both, based on the contents and the calendar.
- 3
Sell, then deliver donations and recycling, and clear what is left.
- 4
The property is empty and broom-clean for the next step — sale of the house, a rental, or the family.
Estate Sale questions
- Should we do an in-home sale or an online sale?
- In-home works when there is enough furniture and housewares to bring buyers to the property. Online works for individual pieces that will sell better on the shop, Facebook Marketplace, or eBay. A lot of estates do both.
- What happens to items that don't sell?
- They are not left in the house. Unsold usable goods are donated. The remainder is recycled at McIntire or disposed of with Cville Junk Removal and the Rivanna Solid Waste Authority.
- Can a sale fit before a listing date?
- Sometimes. Say what the deadline is at the consultation. If the calendar is too tight for a sale, the cleanout can still sort and donate without waiting on buyers.
- Do you appraise the estate?
- The walkthrough decides what is worth selling and where. It is not a licensed appraisal. If the estate needs a formal valuation, that is a separate specialist, and we work around it.
