Case study

Charlottesville Apartment Clean-Out

A fully furnished Charlottesville apartment was cleared and sorted room by room, with usable household goods staged for donation instead of the dumpster. The unit held two bedrooms of furniture, a dining area, a kitchen's worth of housewares, and a storage closet packed with holiday décor.

The challenge

The apartment was still fully furnished, and nearly every room held something that had to be moved, sorted, or hauled.

Bedrooms
Two twin beds with bedding, a wicker trunk, wire desk organizers, a metal lock box, a wooden rack, a shower bench, and floor mats.
Dining area
A drop-leaf console table, four folding chairs, and a stack of framed prints leaning against the wall.
Storage closet
Stacked holiday boxes, two flocked artificial trees, a wreath, and loose totes in a dark, tight space.
Everything else
Lamps, a box fan, rolling luggage, folding tray tables, a drying rack, power strips, and bags and boxes of kitchenware and small goods.

Most of it was in usable condition, so a simple haul-everything-away approach would have sent good furniture and housewares to the landfill.

Approach

The job ran as a sort first, haul second, so nothing left the unit without a decision attached to it.

  1. 1

    Walk-through and triage

Each room was assessed for what could be kept, donated, or discarded, and the heaviest items (beds, table, trees) were flagged for the loading plan.

  2. 2

    Stage in one room

Smaller goods were pulled from closets, kitchen, and bedrooms into a single staging room, which kept the work moving and made progress visible.

  3. 3

    Label and bag by destination

Boxes and bags were marked "DONATE," and lamps, a fan, luggage, framed art, and folding furniture were grouped for pickup instead of being buried in mixed trash.

  4. 4

    Clear the heavy furniture

Beds, the drop-leaf table, folding chairs, and storage pieces came out last, once walkways were open.

  5. 5

    Final sweep

Closet and floors were checked for stragglers, leaving the carpeted rooms open and ready for the next step.

Results

The unit went from full of furniture and boxes to empty and ready for its next use, with reusable goods diverted to donation.
